Send Questions About Greece-Cyprus-Turkey to Congressional Committee on U.S.--Turkish Affairs

AHI ACTION ALERT: U.S. CONGRESS HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE ON EUROPE AND EMERGING THREATS WILL CONVENE A HEARING ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 2005 ON: THE STATE OF U.S.-TURKISH RELATIONS

BACKGROUND:

On Wednesday, May 11, 2005, the House International Relations Subcommittee on Europe and Emerging Threats will convene a hearing on the topic of "The State of U.S.-Turkish Relations."

While the AHI has long advocated hearings that would review U.S. Turkish relations, we feel that this hearing will not serve to address all the issues regarding Turkey that ultimately threaten to undermine stability in the Eastern Mediterranean region and by extension U.S. interests.

On the contrary, by virtue of the background of the witnesses who are scheduled to testify (see attached), in view of the fact that the Ranking Member of this Subcommittee, Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL-19), is the founding member of the Congressional Turkish Caucus and one of the strongest advocates of Turkey in the Congress, it is our belief that this hearing will serve to promote Turkey’s interests without the questioning of Turkey’s overall actions which have seriously damaged U.S. interests.

ACTION REQUESTED -- CALL, FAX, or E-MAIL:

Contact the members of the Subcommittee and ask them to submit questions to the witnesses during this hearing that deal with specific violations by Turkey that threaten U.S. interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.
