Daughters of Penelope, Tethys Chapter #229 was founded over 60 years ago at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, located at the time in Highland Park, NJ, by several area Greek women who wanted to make a difference in their community. Since then, the chapter has actively supported a number of national and local charities and scholarship funds in New Brunswick, Somerset, Piscataway, Highland Park and Edison.
Established in 1929, the Daughters of Penelope is the women’s auxiliary of the AHEPA Family (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) with Headquarters in Washington, D.C. This organization is a leader in philanthropic, educational and cultural activities with over 350 chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, Cyprus, and Australia. Each chapter of the Daughters of Penelope makes a difference in its local community by devoting countless volunteer hours to hospitals, retirement homes, women’s centers and daycare centers; and by organizing educational seminars, helping the less fortunate, supporting their local church and making monetary contributions to neighborhood charities and scholarship funds.
