Edward S. Petry, Ph.D.



Edward S. Petry is the Executive Director and a member of the Board of Directors of the Ethics Officer Association (EOA), an international nonprofit association based in Belmont, MA whose members represent more than half of the Fortune 100.

At the EOA, Dr. Petry has overseen the development of what are recognized as the premier conferences and training programs in the business ethics field. He has developed partnerships between the EOA and the World Bank and the U.S. Sentencing Commission and he is now leading an effort to create a global Business Conduct Management System Standard. Earlier this year, he was invited by the New York Stock Exchange to submit recommendations to the NYSE’s Accountability and Listing Standards Committee. Dr. Petry’s recommendations were included in the Exchange’s final report.

Dr. Petry has authored several major surveys including the U.S. Sentencing Commission’s National Survey of Ethics & Compliance in Organizations (1995), Sources & Consequences of Workplace Pressure (1997) and Technology & Ethics in the Workplace (1998). He has edited and/or co-authored six books on business ethics, including The Ethical Edge: Tales of Organizations that Have Faced Moral Crises (1996) and The Ethics of Accounting and Finance (1996); he has published articles on business ethics and nineteenth-century philosophy and has been a featured speaker at numerous national and international forums.

Dr. Petry has been quoted or appeared on the topic of corporate ethics and compliance in journals, newspapers and media outlets including: CNN, the BBC, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, USA Today, NBC’s Today Show, Fox News, National Public Radio’s Marketplace, The Jim Lehrer News Hour, The New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, Working Woman, CFO Magazine, Ethikos, The National Law Journal, Federal Ethics Report, Financial World, The Financial Times, La Tribune and Wprost (Poland).

He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Pennsylvania State University and has also received degrees in philosophy from The University of Toronto and Trinity College. Prior to becoming the EOA’s first full-time director, Dr. Petry was a tenured professor of philosophy at Bentley College and a Visiting Professor at Clark University.

In addition to serving on the EOA’s Board, Dr. Petry is a member of the Ethics Oversight Committee for the United States Olympic Committee, is a Senior Fellow and member of the Advisory Board of the Ethics Resource Center Fellows Program, is a representative to the American National Standards Institute, and is a member of the Advisory Group currently reviewing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines for Organizations.
