Onassis Foundation to Sponsor "Apollo on Delos"
with Filarmonica della Scala and Soloists of Teatro alla Scala Ballet

The Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, as part of its program for the promotion of Greek culture in Greece and abroad, presents a major cultural event entitled “Apollo Delios”, on Saturday September 1st 2007, on the island of Delos.

The event features participants of international acclaim, namely the Filarmonica della Scala and soloists of the Teatro alla Scala Ballet. “Apollo Delios” will consist of two parts: Igor Stravinsky’s “Apollo Musagete”, choreographed by George Balanchine, with Roberto Bolle in the leading role, and Gustav Malher’s 1st Symphony. The Filarmonica della Scala will be directed by Daniele Gatti.

“Apollo Delios”, honouring the god who, according to mythology, not only was born in Delos but also “reveals (deloi), sees everything and makes everything visible”, attests to the historic unity of the Greek civilization, through a sequence of mutual offerings: the Greek Spirit spreads and becomes ecumenical, before returning to its cradle: indeed, to the “most splendid complex of rocks” (Heidegger), to the heart of the Cyclades, Delos. Apart from being “healer, seer, and solar (Phoebus)”, Apollo is linked to Music; he is “musagetes”. Therefore we selected Stravinsky’s “Apollo Musagete” ballet, choreographed by Balanchine, and performed by some of the most distinguished artists in the world.

This major cultural event will be recorded and broadcast nationally on television by the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) and –via satellite- internationally to the Greeks of the Diaspora and to countries that have expressed interest in broadcasting the event.

“Apollo Delios” will be repeated on Monday, September 3rd 2007, at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Revenues from ticket sales of the Athens performance will benefit the Hellenic Society for Disabled Children (ELEPAP).

The cultural event is held in association with Attiki Cultural Society; its contribution has been invaluable with regard to the creation of the artistic program and to assuring the collaboration of the Filarmonica della Scala and the Teatro alla Scala Ballet soloists, as well as to the organization and production of the performances, both in Delos and at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
