Diaspora Symposium

Nostos, Scientists, Technology--Vehicle to
Economic Development in Hellas

CHICAGO, May 10 – “Nostos, Science, Development” a Symposium for Hellene Scientists, will be held Saturday, June 11, in Chicago, to help determine how Diaspora scientists can contribute to the technological and economic development of Hellas.

“We wish to determine if Hellene scientists would return to, or establish links with, Hellas and under what conditions they would be prepared to do so,” explained Andrew A. Athens who heads the two organizations sponsoring the symposium, United Hellenic American Congress (UHAC) and the World Council of Hellenes (SAE).

“This model of bridging education, scientific development and technology for the purpose of encouraging entrepreneurial activity has served several countries well,” Mr. Athens said. “We are responding to Prime Minister Karamanlis’s initiative announced last January at the National Council on Research and Technology. We wish to make this symposium useful to scientists and to the leaders in Hellas who are considering the country’s options.

The subtitle of the symposium is Education+ Innovation+ Investment = New Wealth. It will begin with presentations on educational and scientific conditions in Hellas today, future plans of the Hellenic state, and comments by Hellene scientists. It will continue with presentations on countries that followed this development model and a luncheon.

Decision makers from Hellas and knowledgeable education, political and industry leaders will discuss issues pertinent to scientists and development. Symposium proceedings will be recorded and published along with online statements contributed by scientists from around the world.

The Symposium will be held at the Drake Hotel, Chicago. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the proceedings will conclude with a summary review between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Conference attendance is free. Participants may reserve a room at the special “Scientists Symposium” rate of $245 by calling the Drake Hotel directly, 312-787-2200 or 1-800-553-7253.
