Queen Sofia Given the Golden Medal of Athens

Queen Sofia of Spain has been granted the Athens Gold Medal for her 'humanitarian work and her contribution to the support of Greek art and culture'.

She accepted the honour yesterday from the Mayor of Athens, her native city, Nikitas Kaklamanis, and gave a speech in Greek, telling the audience that her first memories as a child take her back fo the city, which would always have a special place in her heart.

Queen Sofia said that Lord Byron was right when he said that our earliest memories would also be our last.

The Queen also had words of sympathy for those affected by the widespread forest fires seen in Greece last summer.

The Mayor of Athens observed that Spain and Greece had much in common. The same award was granted to the Queen's husband, King Don Juan Carlos, some ten years ago.
