Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting Scholarship

NEW YORK--The Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting (EOCS) Scholarship Committee has announced the recipient of the 11th annual national scholarship. The winner is Georgia A. Giannopoulos, New Hyde Park, N.Y. and a member of the Cathedral of St. Paul, Hempstead, N.Y. She was selected from a large pool of applicants from throughout the United States and received a $1,000 check. The EOCS Scholarship Program is offered to high school Boy and Girl Scout seniors of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The committee evaluates the candidates using the following criteria: (1) be a registered active ember of a Boy or Girl Scout unit, (2) have earned the Eagle Scout Award for boys or the Gold Award for girls, (3) be an active member of an Eastern Orthodox Church and have earned Alpha Omega Scouting Religious Award, (4) have demonstrated practical citizenship in their church, high school, Scout unit, and in the community, (5) scholastic achievement. The scholarship is made possible by the EOCS Scholarship Endowment Fund and not based on need. Annually the EOCS awards $1,000 for first place and $500 for the runner-up. Georgia has been a member for 13 years in her church's and Great Neck's Girl Scout program and has held numerous leadership positions and received a number of awards. She earned the Chi-Rho and Alpha Omega Religious Scout awards, the Girl Scout Silver and Gold awards and had participated in numerous EOCS Scout Retreats. In addition to her involvement in the scouting program, Georgia was extremely active in her religious community as a member of the junior choir, Sunday school teacher, member GOYA basketball team, and participated in several Inter GOYA Olympics. While in high school she was extremely active in many organizations and programs, where she received a number of awards and recognitions. Because of Georgia's scholastic achievements and being an all-around spectacular individual she was accepted to a number of colleges and universities.
