George Davis Passes Away


He was born in Lewiston on Jan. 29, 1924, son of Sam and Vasilo Goranites Davis.

He attended Scarborough Schools and graduated from the University of Southern Maine.

George enlisted in the Army and served with the 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division, taking part in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He worked as Civilian Budgeting Accountant Supervisor for the SAC Air Force Bases in Northern New England, in various public and private practices and for more than 20 years was office manager and accountant for James A. McBrady Inc.

A dedicated golfer, he belonged to Willowdale Golf Club and later was a 37-year member of Purpoodock Golf Club, serving on the Board of Governors.

He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Anna Ross of Portland.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Geraldine Mayo Davis; sons, Terence Davis of Scarborough, and Alan Davis of Bradenton, Fla.; daughter, Jean Bessette of South Portland; grandchildren, Kristen Davis, and Nicholas and Emily Bessette; brother, Duke Davis of Miami, Fla.; sisters, Helene Arnold and Pauline Davis of Portland, and Mary Davis of Auburn; and niece, Suzanne Parenteau and nephew, Vernon Ross.

Friends are invited to call from 1-2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 3, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland, the VFW Color Guard will honor him at 1:45 p.m. followed by a funeral at 2 p.m. a celebration of his life will follow at the Hobbs Hospitality Center. Interment will be private at Brooklawn Memorial Park Portland.
